Terms of Use

The University of Pennsylvania Law School Alumni Commons site is provided by the Law School and is designed to facilitate communication among alumni for personal, Law School or University-related purposes. Information available through Alumni Commons may be used for specific personal, Law School and University-related purposes only.

I. Privacy and Security

The Law School has not, does not and will never sell alumni information to anyone. All alumni information is strictly guarded for use by individual alumni and Law School administration for personal, Law School or University-related purposes.

The Law School has taken all reasonable precautions to secure the personal information available through Alumni Commons. Alumni Commons is password protected to allow access by registered Law School alumni and administrators only. Although this precaution should effectively protect any personal information available through Alumni Commons from abuse or outside interference, a certain degree of privacy risk is faced any time information is shared over the Internet. Therefore, through the Online Directory feature of Alumni Commons, you have the ability to hide your information from being viewed by other community members.

II. Policy and Guidelines for Proper Use

To safeguard the operation of Alumni Commons, the Law School has adopted many guidelines and policies that are used by the University to govern conduct, particularly conduct that occurs in an Online environment. In addition to the Law School's policies and guidelines, users of Alumni Commons must abide by the following specific rules and regulations:

A. Unauthorized copying, reproduction, republishing, uploading, downloading, posting, transmitting or duplicating any of the material is prohibited. You may download or copy any downloadable materials displayed on Alumni Commons for home, noncommercial and personal use only; provided, however, that you maintain all copyright, trademark and other notices contained in such material and you agree to abide by all additional copyright notices or restrictions contained in any material accessed through Alumni Commons.

Copyrighted material, including without limitation software, graphics, text, photographs, sound, video, and musical recordings, may not be placed on the site without the express permission of the owner of the copyright in the material, or other legal entitlement to use the material. Although Penn Law does not routinely screen or monitor content posted by users to the site, the School reserves the right to remove content of which it becomes aware that violates the previously stated rules, but is under no obligation to do so.

B. Because Penn Law is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, use of information or communications available through Alumni Commons for any commercial, public or political purposes is prohibited.

Other prohibited activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Solicitations, cold-calling of any kind or mass-mailings for commercial purposes
  • Use of abusive, defamatory, profane, or threatening language or content of any kind
  • Statements that are bigoted, hateful, or racially offensive
  • Content that discusses illegal activities with the intent to commit them
  • Content that infringes another's intellectual property, including, but not limited to, copyrights, trademarks, or trade secrets
  • Material or postings that contains vulgar or obscene language or images
  • Uploading, transmitting, distributing or otherwise publishing any materials containing a virus or other harmful components
  • Restricting or inhibiting any other user from enjoying any service on Alumni Commons

D. All aliases adopted by Alumni Commons users are subject to approval by the Law School and/or the Development and Alumni Relations office (DAR) to ensure that the proper image is associated with the institution.

E. Users shall not access nor attempt to access any other user's account, nor misrepresent or attempt to misrepresent their own identity while using Alumni Commons.

Neither the Law School nor the DAR office is responsible for screening communications in advance, and neither the Law School nor the DAR office will actively monitor the use Alumni Commons. For this reason, it is essential that the alumni users of Alumni Commons report any abuses or misuse of Alumni Commons to the Law School. If the Law School determines that a user's participation in Alumni Commons creates a liability for the Law School or that the user has violated the policies set forth herein, the Law School reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to take actions against the user. The Law School reserves the right to expel a user and deny a user further access to the Alumni Commons if such user violates these policies or any applicable laws or regulations.

III. Liability and Indemnity

The reliability of the information available through Alumni Commons is largely dependent upon the actions of community registrants. The Law School can make no representations about the accuracy, reliability, completeness, or timeliness of this information.

The Law School does not warrant that Alumni Commons will operate error-free or that the site and its server are free of computer viruses or other harmful material. To the fullest extent permitted by the law, the Law School disclaims all warranties, including the warranties of merchantability, non-infringement, and fitness for particular purpose. In no event shall the Law School be liable for any damages whatsoever, including, without limitation, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages, resulting from the use of or inability to use information or materials available on Alumni Commons.

By using Alumni Commons, you agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Law School, DAR and their respective agents from and against any and all losses, claims, damages, costs, and expenses that may arise from your use of Alumni Commons or your breach of these policies. The Law School will provide notice to you of any such action or claim, and reserves the right to participate, at our expense, in the investigation, settlement, and defense of any such action or claim.

Please note that the Law School reserves the right to modify these terms at any time and will publish notice of any such modifications online at this site or elsewhere online. By continuing to access a site after notice of such modifications has been published, you signify your agreement to be bound by them. You should review the policies periodically to ensure that you are familiar with them.

Participation in Alumni Commons is a privilege. By clicking on the "Accept" button, you agree to abide by Alumni Commons policies outlined herein. If you cannot accept these policies, please click on the "Do Not Accept" button to indicate that you cannot accept the policies and do not wish to register as a user of Alumni Commons.
